2014 Graduate Assistant Update - Amy Rekward

At the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture, we have an assortment of records that provide snapshots of moments in Iowa’s history of education. Our records are available in three formats: physical, microfilm, and microfiche. This past summer I was involved in the process of inventorying the microfilm collection. Having spent a significant amount of time with the collection, I have become a microfilm connoisseur of sorts. Before this experience, I had only used microfilm once or twice for research projects at the undergraduate level.

Spring 2012 Graduate Assistant Update - Steven Pals

My experience with the Rural School Records began in May of 2012. Due to a medical emergency by one graduate assistant and the graduation of another, the museum required a new person to learn the ropes and begin a full time grant funded position for the summer. My initial reaction was uncertainty; I had never done anything archival before. My degree that I will receive in my Masters program will be in Public History and so archives skills will likely be a part of my future career. My initial training was very minimal.

Summer 2013 Graduate Assistant Update - Amy Rekward

This summer I began working as a graduate assistant with the UNI Museum’s Rural School Project. From the day I started, I have continuously been learning new information, which has made this an extremely enjoyable opportunity. I came to this position with an extensive background in museum work, having worked as a collections technician at the UNI Museum and as an intern at various other institutions. My museum experience has helped me throughout my assistantship, but I have had to adapt to working in the archive setting.

Summer 2013 Graduate Assistant Update - RaeAnn Swanson

Working with the Rural School Records this summer was a great experience for me. As a recent graduate and soon to be a graduate student of the History Department at UNI, working with historical documents and helping organize information for researchers is central to my field of study. Because I was unfamiliar with the way school records were kept, the first days of working with the Rural School Records brought quite a few difficulties. It took pouring over hundreds of Daily Attendance Registers to finally learn how to distinguish them from Room Registers and various other reports.
