Bone from bowfin or dogfish..
The bowfin or dogfish
This is a primitive type of bony fish. Although the body feels smooth and leathery, it is actually covered with rounded scales, which are smooth and have no rough prickles like some other fish. Note the long dorsal (back) fin and the rounded caudal (tail) fin. In Iowa the bowfin is confined largely to the channel and overflow waters of the Mississippi, although small population is known from Spirit Lake.
