Sharps Rifle Model 1859, was first issued with a disc primer lock. Sharps rifles were excellent capping breech loaders, except they leaked fire between the breech block and the barrel. They were useful for rapid fire, able to fire ten times per minute, and known for accurate shots. The model was very popular during the American Civil War and the term “sharpshooter” comes from the use of Sharps rifles. On the left side of the gun "C. Sharps, Sept. 12, 1848" is stamped. The right side frame is stamped "C. Sharps Pat. Oct. 5th, 1852", "R. S. Lawrence Pat. April 12th, 1859". Top of the barrel is stamped "Sharps Rifle Manufag. Co. Hartford, Conn." "New Model 1859." Serial number 37598.
