The 48th United States presidential election in 1976 was won by the former governor of Georgia, Jimmy Carter, who was the Democratic candidate. The Republican candidate was the incumbent President Gerald Ford. Gerald Ford came into office when President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 after the Watergate scandal came forth making Ford the only sitting President who had never been previously elected to national office.
