The 48th presidential election in 1976 was between the former governor of Georgia Jimmy Carter who was the Democratic candidate and the incumbent President Gerald Ford who was the Republican candidate. The winner Jimmy Carter was the first president elected from the Deep South since Zachary Taylor in 1848.
