Ankle bone of a llama. Carved similar to human figure statues at Tiahuanaco, with indentation for neck, square eye sockets and arms at sides and hands on belly. Carving lines are precise. "TIAHUANOCO" is written on the back in black marker. Bone is worn smooth at the joint and rough, showing marrow at the base. An image of an idol resembling Ponce Stela from the Tiwanaku temple Kalasasaya. Carved into the ankle bone of a llama. Llamas held a high importance among the Tiwanaku culture as they were essential for transportation of goods and food. Originally an egalitarian empire, stratification of classes started with the seizing of llama herds for control over the food supply.
