2019-FIC-30 (Egg)

Hand painted russian egg. The custom of painting eggs follows the legend that Mary Magdalene came to Rome to preach the Gospel, and offered to Emperor Tiberius a red-coloured egg and said, “Christ is risen.” Since then giving painted eggs has become a way of celebrating the Resurrection. In Russian, these painted eggs have a long tradition in icon painting and have become a popular tourist art for purchase. This example replicates a dying style called pysanky.
