Anthropology

Archaeology (the study of ancient human culture) and ethnology (the study of recent and living people) are the two major sections in the anthropology collection.

The archaeological collection comes from North and West Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe, the Andes, Mesoamerica, the Great Plains, and the Great Basin areas.

The ethnographic collection includes artifacts from the Andes, Amazon, Mesoamerica, Circum-Caribbean, East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, West Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

205 2017-17-7 Mask Kpeliye'e mask of the Senufo people. Oval, elongated face with scarring on cheeks and on protrusions along the lower jaw. The mouth extends from the face and exhibits a cylindrical beard-like object extending below the lips. The eyes are carved out slits. 229 197078.15.0019E Loom This is the entire loom with the weaving attached. There are two wooden sticks that holds the strings. The cotton strings are different colours and woven into a geometric design of squares and lines. The weaving stops with another small piece of wood and leads to more open  string. The spindle is attached with the red thread. It is quite common to find geometric designs among the Shipibo-Conibo because in the past the symbols had meaning that held their beliefs and values. The ability to interpret and translate that meaning has since been lost, but the designs are still present.
