The Penn family arms with the motto "Mercy Justice" appears in the upper left. The denomination is represented with two crowns below the arms. Colony name appears as "Pennsylvania ". Center front of brim has applied piece of brown felt shaped like two long tapered leaves knotted at center. Leaf portions have rows of stitching parallel to outer edge. Crown has been pinched and hand stitched to create a prominent oval shape at top front. Base of crown encircled by 1" brown grosgrain ribbon with flat bow at center back. Fine brown veil, tacked at base of crown and outer edge of brim, has occasional diamond-shaped medallions woven in. Two tags attached to inside rim: "Pasadena Hat" , "New York Creation / 22 1/2 (obv.), Mfg. Union/Fair Labor/Standards/Consumer/Protection/Label (rev.)".

500 1997.15.0008 Hat Woman's. Modified pillbox hat. Sides are not as high as typical pillbox. Black buckram form with diamond-shaped motifs at side. Hat is completely covered with lavender sequins which form a 10-petalled flower on crown and diamond panels at sides, in concentric rows. Diamond panels lined with black felt and stiffened with grosgrain covered wire to aid hat in gripping onto head. Black grosgrain ribbon band encircles inside. Medium weight black net veil in front between diamond medallions.
