303 1988.21.1 Mask This mask is carved from wood and has not been painted. It features the face of a person but all facial features are warped. The eyes are two circles in the middle of the mask with no observable eyebrows. The nose is wide and flat, and nose lines are seen on either side of the nose. The mouth is carved open but it is not see through. The chin juts out a bit. There are carved ears that are not in perfect placements to each other. The top of the mask contains a helmet for the mask that is connected by the same piece of wood. It covers the top of the head well, although if one were to wear the mask it would probably not be tight. 1988.21.1 (Mask) image

344 1993.43.1 Mask Mask, metal with pronounced eyes, cheekbones, nose Holes in ears which earrings are attached: a ring with a yellow tear-drop shaped pendant hanging from it. Two snakes, one on either side of head from bottom ears up on to forehead, meeting with mouths raised dot pattern. Lips are pronounced with a red color (faded). Cheeks have traces of red paint; eyes, earring and snakes are yellow or white painted. On back of mask is a hemp rope attached to mask on either side by a hole under the ears. There is a loose-weave burlap-like material glued on from top of head to mouth area. On the mouth there is a metal projection that sticks out about two inches (on back of mask). There is a hole punched at top of forehead. Holes under eyes. Color: BK,YL,WH
345 1993.43.2 Mask This is a Mexican mask that has been carved to portray an old man. This mask is possibly a Viejo mask from the traditional Viejitos dance. It could also be a hermit mask, or Juan Blanco mask. This mask is painted a porcelain pink skin color. It contains two carved eye holes with painted eyebrows and eyes above and below it. The nose is large and nostrils are painted lower on the nose. There is a long black mustache above the mouth. The mouth is carved open and two white teeth are carved from the wood to be shown at all times. There is a painted black beard with some indentations present. 1993.43.2 (Mask) image
346 1993.43.3 Mask This mask is from Mexico and features a human head with two animals. The human head has all facial features. It contains two eyes that are lined in red and two eye slits above the eyes. There are no eyebrows. The nose is long and thin and there are carved nostrils in the mask. The mouth is a thin upturned smile painted red with no teeth showing. The hair of this mask is black carved vertical and curved lines, almost forming a hairstyle and horns of the same wooden carvings. The mask is colored beige and the bottom half of the mask is a much darker brown color. There are two animals present on the mask, assumingly pigs. The first pig is brown and is facing upwards from the center of the mask forehead. The pig has two eyes outlined in red, a snout with nostrils, an open mouth painted red, and two carved ears that have been broken off. The next animal is another pig, however this one is painted green and is present on the chin of the mask. This pig faces down and features all of the prior pigs additions, except the green pig has one of its ears fully intact. There is a hole on the top of the mask and a hole on either side of the cheek. 1993.43.3 (Mask) image
347 1993.43.4 Mask Lightweight mask; human head with skull and arms on forehead. Stylized hair coming around face to form a beard. Prominent eyebrows, cheekbones, nose and open mouth with teeth. Long eye slits above eyes. On the mask the left side the beard appears to be braided; the other side is not. Notches on upper lip may indicate a moustache. On skull the mouth is open with teeth as the main mask is on back of mask the cracks from the front are coming through to the back. Color very faded. Pastels all over mask; blotched all over. Black color on lips, eyebrow; on skulls forehead is black. Pink beard, and arms and lower 1/2 of skull; rest of mask is blotchy colors. 1993.43.4 (Mask) image
348 1994.30.36 Tumpline Two braided cords on either end lashed together with 2 braided rawhide pieces. Middle portion is wide and flat on one side. Has brown animal fur on it. Color: TN
349 1994.8.1 Mask This is a Mexican "Janus" mask. Janus is the Roman god of gates and doorways and he is portrayed by the mask having two faces, pointing in opposite directions. The right side of the mask is green and the left side is yellow. Both sides feature a painted eye in the socket, an eyehole under the painted eyebrow, a carved nose, red cheeks with black and white painted lines, a mouth with red lips, and a painted eye on the chin of each. Above each mouth is a painted mustache. There is a small hole in the top center of the forehead. This mask is carved out of wood and there is some damage on the raised parts of the mask. 1994.8.1 (Mask) image
350 1994.8.2 Mask This mask is from Mexico and is possibly a Juan negro mask. It resembles a man and is entirely painted brown or black. The mask features black carved sideburns, a mustache, and hair. There are eye holes for the mask wearer, and two smaller holes above the nose. The nose is large and carved from the wood, no nostrils. The mouth is slightly smiling but is not fully open. This mask has carved ears. There is a hole in the center of the forehead and two on the cheeks. 1994.8.2 (Mask) image
