At the top of the turner there is a diagonal cut into the wood, extending out, then it is a straight line down and across to complete the turner. The top of the masher angles out slightly to create a ridge which is colored dark brown. 409 1998.19.31 Ladle Miniature. The handle widens before it connects with the ladle. Looking down into the ladle, the center is carved out, and there is a small hole in the center. Looking at the ladle from the side, the ladle curves downward and looks like a half-circle. Two dark brown lines are drawn into the bottom of the ladle, and another one at the base of the handle. 410 1998.19.32 Mortar Miniature. The handle has a rounded tip and widens slightly when it attaches to the body. There is a small ridge, then the wood extends out a bit at an angle. The next two pieces are similar to the first extension, except the pieces are successively larger and the the angle of inversion is greater. The final, base piece, is round, with the top colored dark brown. In the middle are vertical cuts into the wood, with dark brown horizontal lines between the grooves. There is a thin dark brown line drawn around the bottom, and a small hole in the base. Color: TN,BR

412 1998.19.34 Cloth, tapa There are two types of diamonds on the cloth. The first type begins with brown ink drawn on the shape of a diamond, then two inner blue lines also in the shape of a diamond, set against white. The center of the diamond has blue lines drawn in the shape of an "M". There are two of them and they reflect one another. The rest of the diamond-shaped center is blue, with a white rectangle on either side. A brown line is drawn through the diamond. The second type has similar brown and blue outer lines as the first. Inside these lines are blue lines arranged in a step pattern and resemble a diamond. Inside the step diamond are two brown triangles, facing one another, with a vertical blue line drawn between them. These two styles of diamonds are arranged in an alternating pattern, with the first style in one horizontal row, then below it is the second style in a horizontal row below it. Connecting the tips of the diamonds in each row is a solid brown diamond, and the sides of the diamonds are separated by solid blue circles, with the white cloth showing through on the sides of the circles. 413 1998.19.35 Shirt A traditional Guatemalan shirt. There are thick vertical stripes of yellow surrounded on both sides with thin vertical stripes of orange, purple, green, and maroon. Next are thick vertical stripes of light blue surrounded on both sides with thin vertical stripes of red, dark purple, bright yellow, and dark blue. There is a breast pocket on both sides. On the rim of the pockets, collar and center buttons seen there is stitching. On the two outer edges the thread is light blue and stitched in a braid pattern. Inside the light blue thread on either side is light purple thread, stitched to resemble a circle. In the center is dark purple thread stitched to resemble a diamond, with an orange stitched center. The buttons are dark purple, sewn on with blue thread, and are inserted through a separate piece of cloth behind the center seam as not to show through a separate piece of cloth behind the center seam as not to show through on to the stitching. There is a button under the right collar, and a piece of cloth shaped like a loop on the left upper center seam to serve as a buttonhole. Color: PR,YL,BL,OR
414 1998.19.36 Figurine Female figurine in traditional Guatemalan dress. The skirt is white near the top, red in the middle, and black ast the bottom with red diamonds in the center. The bottom rim of the skirt is a jagged cut. The shirt is yellow and long-sleeved. She is wearing a multi-colored cape lined in green, and is wearing a black hat. In her hands she is holding a spinning spindel and yarn. Her face hands and feet are pink. The figuine is mounted on a thin square of cardboard. Color: RD,BK,WH,YL,ML

A symmetric paired pattern of geometric designs created by small diamonds flank the large central diamonds. The outer edge has a diamond-like pattern of two shades of purple separated by blue.
