1 00.70.42 Gun, Musket The Harpers Ferry Flintlock is a pre-civil war, .69 caliber musketoon, the shorter barreled version of a musket, made in 1825. Harpers Ferry Armory was selected by George Washington for the second national armory. Between 1822 to 1829 the armory was very focused on making uniform guns, moving away from the traditional craft based production system to a more factory production system to continue to meet growing demand. 2 00.70.43A Gun, Rifle Sharps Rifle Model 1859, was first issued with a disc primer lock. Sharps rifles were excellent capping breech loaders, except they leaked fire between the breech block and the barrel. They were useful for rapid fire, able to fire ten times per minute, and known for accurate shots. The model was very popular during the American Civil War and the term “sharpshooter” comes from the use of Sharps rifles. On the left side of the gun "C. Sharps, Sept. 12, 1848" is stamped. The right side frame is stamped "C. Sharps Pat. Oct. 5th, 1852", "R. S. Lawrence Pat. April 12th, 1859". Top of the barrel is stamped "Sharps Rifle Manufag. Co. Hartford, Conn." "New Model 1859." 4 00.70.449 Gun, Rifle The .45-70 caliber, US Model 1884 US Springfield, serial number 485789, was used in war with Spain. 5 00.70.45 Firearm Percussion cap smoothbore sporting musket made by E.K. Purdy with walnut wood stock, silver end cap on forearm; wooden ramrod; octagonal browned steel barrel, silver blade front, rear sight adjustable for elevation, stamped on barrel "E. K. Purdy, Schoolcraft, Mich."; metal lock plate and hammer, engraved with floral design; curved brass butt plate; brass trigger guard; metal retaining pin. Made is Schoolcraft, Michigan during the early 19th century and appears to be a 36 caliber.
6 00.70.46 Gun, Musket Confederate (C.S.A) contact rifle, .54 caliber, stamped “Pulaski T C.S.A.1861". The Pulaski Armory was believed to have been started by brothers Napoleon B. and Joseph H. Zuccarello, James McLean and William N. Webb. This rifle was loosely patterned on the U.S. Model 1841 and consisted of recycled parts including flintlock parts. When altering the rifle from lock to percussion, it had to be fitted with a new hammer that was awkward but functional. The hammer on this specific rifle is broken and thus no longer functional. A union raid in 1861 destroyed many of the estimated 300 rifles produced. 00.70.46 (Gun, Musket) image
7 00.70.47 Gun Manton cap lock double barrel shotgun, English made sporting-arm, is equipped with a walnut wood stock, checkered piston-grip, metal side-plates, and double metal browned barrels. It is stamped, "E.B., 12, 33, 1.” It is also characterized by metal hammers and fittings, a metal butt plate, a walnut cleaning rod, a metal trigger guard, and engraved designs throughout. Joseph Manton was known as the “father of the modern shotgun.” The style of Mr. Manton was considered superior over others. 00.70.47 (Gun) image
8 00.70.48 Gun, Shotgun This gun is a 122.5 cm caplock, double barrel, Belgium made sporting firearm, equipped with a walnut wood stock, and checkered pistol grip. The double steeled browned barrels are stamped with “Drisket & Waroux, J.M., 5, 5, 29200. The metal buttplate is stamped “N” indicating this weapon was produced in 1919.
