1 1970.16.2 Dress Woman's dress, likely for nursing. Print. Orange, green, black and white print on a blue background. 1 printed pattern piece; closures underneath bust area. Number of closures around back of neck, forming on the shoulder to the front of arm as well. Also four open belt loops. Vertical strips of glossy satin weave throughout material. Stand up band collar. Yoke overlay of knotted designs in yellowish cord. Closure with hook and eye along back of neck continuing along left shoulder and down left side of breast, ending above the waist. Material covering bossom pulls aside to reveal underlaying built in front closing corset with boning. Built-in corset with boning has hook and eye closure and several ties. Band collar. Leg of mutton sleeves with slit at end and closed with a hook and eye. Cuffs are slit. Gathered panel in back of dress creates fullness. Hand mended and reinforced. Two reinforced parallel vertical slits behind and on either side of rear gathered panel (for belt?) Hand sewn repairs in brown thread throughout. Small green band on inside of hem. 2 1973.51.17 Scarf Woman's; lined. On one end green velvet triangle with 5 dangly metal circles each 2" apart. Above long side of triangle is an embroidered daisy design in silk. Opposite end has fringe of 6 dark green and 5 dark red silk ribbons of silk, each ribbon 3 1/4" long folded to a central point at each end. At end of ribbon hang 9 velvet balls covered with gold netting, 5 of dark burgundy velvet and 4 of dark blue. 2 balls are missing that were originally attached. Above these ribbons are 6 applied symbols: a red velvet anchor shape, sewn on with embroidered white crows feet, a green velvet crescent moon sewn on with yellow embroidered crows feet, a dark blue velvet circle attached with yellow crosses, a green velvet star attached with pink crows feet, a blue silk U shape attached with red crosses and a dark red velvet star sewn on with yellow crow's feet. 5 1995.2.4 Sash In the shape of a snake - dorsal side is totally beaded to 1/4' from edge. Beads sewn on fine grain material; ventral surface is a coarse grain. Tapers to a point on either end. Tapers and widens to form a head and a neck. Three major sections, a head, body & tail. Head, eyes set off by cowrie shells, back bone of cowrie shells. Head motifs include nostril/venom pits, eyes with puplis, triangles. Beaded loop attached at anterior/head end. Two sections to body, upper back motif - pink mask/face. Eyes with pupils and red stripes indicating scarification or tears, blue mouth. Mask/face in green field. Rest of body composed of 1 pair lizard, 3 pair fish along outside edge in red triangles; 3 turtles down center in white diamonds. Another mask/face occurs at tail end, similar to mask motif design, except with a green mouth. Color: RD,BK,WH,GR,ML
6 1996.19.1 Robe Deep blue pongee or crepe silk coat with kimono sleeves; no shoulder seam. Lined in light blue. Neck and hem and side slits trimmed with two types of embroidered trim. Trim nearest the edge is 1 5/8" wide and has black background shaded blue flowers and brown branches. Black satin binding on both edges of this trip. Other trim is a braid edging with multi-colored flowers separated by a key kind of motif. Scroll motif in blue below, and a scalloped edge. Other edge is straight. Sewn on by hand about 3/8" from wider band. Sleeve edges have strip of cream silk 3 3/4" wide embroidered in satin stitches, blue flowers and zig zag embroidery on edge next to strip of same border at neck and hem edges. Gold buttons are fastened by plain black silk eyelets. Garment laps left over right and buttons at right side seam. Two buttons at neckline, one in center and one to the right and about two inches lower. Left front neck edge tapers from there to side seam button at bottom of sleeve. Two buttons at side seam resemble a flower bud. Two at neck are flat with design of a lion rampant holding a crown. Back of these buttons reads "W. R. Smith. Treble Gilt". Color: BL,BK,WH
7 1996.19.2 Robe Sheer cream robe, with kimono sleeves and center back seam; no shoulder seam. Closes center front with no lap; black silk cord eyelets. Sheer fabric has occasional 8" circular medallions woven in. Sleeve and side seams continuous and reinforced with strip of material sewn in and whipped to back of garment. Four kinds of braid used for neckline, center front and sleeves. Prominent is a sheer black strip 2 1/4" wide with flower and branch motifs in half-cross stitches in shades of blue. Used at hems and 27" up from center opening from hem, mitered at hem edge of center front and upper end. Near this strip, 3/8" apart, is a dark blue faille or grosgrain braid, 1" wide, with medium blue embroidery, narrow strips of rose buds on the edges and roses 1/2' wide down the center. Remainder of center front is trimmed with 1" wide puple braid with designs in cream and lavender woven in. Entire neck center opening and bottom edged with black silk binding 1/4" wide. At neckline black fabric with blue flowers is at neck edge, fasted at outer edge by bias strip stitched on flat. 3/8' away is the dark blue braid with blue flowers, as on the hem and lower center front. Sleeves end with double layer of plain cream colored fabric to which the end of the kimono sleeve is whipped down on the inside of the sleeve. Above this a multi-colored braid with narrow rows of blue, purple and cream stitched on pale green background. Above this is a row of the black net and blue flower trim, edged at the top by a black silk bias band. 3 buttons are open work brass balls. Color: CR,BK,PR
