1 1983.6.2 Mask This is a Mexican "Parrot" mask that might have been used in rituals. The mask is painted with different shades of green in a mottled pattern. There are two circular eye holes in different shapes and sizes, and one oval mouth that is open and the lips are painted red. The nose of the mask is long and down curved. There is a small hole in the center of the forehead and two holes on each side of the masks on the cheeks. 2 1983.6.4 Mask This is a Mexican "Scorpion" mask. It is portraying a human but contains exaggerated features. This mask features blue eyes that bulge out from the socket, with eyeholes near the eyebrow for the mask wearer to see. There are five jutting roots of the beard and two roots from the mustache, all are brown and black in color. The face has red cheeks and a red nose, with an open downturned mouth. 3 1983.6.5 Mask This is a Mexican "chivo" or goat mask. It is used for a ritual dance called the Dance of the Goats. This mask has a human face with pink skin, a black beard, and red cheeks. There are two eye slits with painted eyelashes. There is a carved open smile with red paint on the lips for the mouth. The mask contains a long curling nose that is painted yellow, red and green. The mask also features two horns on the side of the mask which are painted appropriately. Between the two horns is a length of string that has green, red, and brown ribbons hanging vertically. 4 1983.6.7 Mask This is a Mexican "Scorpion" mask. This mask portrays a human face with normal features. There is a set of blue eyes with eye slits below the eyebrow for the mask wearer to see. The nose juts out and has been carved well as the nostrils are see through. The skin of the mask is painted light pink and the cheeks of the mask have been painted red. The lips form a circle and have been painted red. There are 9 jutting roots from the sides and chin of the mask, forming curling red and black horns. 5 1993.43.2 Mask This is a Mexican mask that has been carved to portray an old man. This mask is possibly a Viejo mask from the traditional Viejitos dance. It could also be a hermit mask, or Juan Blanco mask. This mask is painted a porcelain pink skin color. It contains two carved eye holes with painted eyebrows and eyes above and below it. The nose is large and nostrils are painted lower on the nose. There is a long black mustache above the mouth. The mouth is carved open and two white teeth are carved from the wood to be shown at all times. There is a painted black beard with some indentations present. 1993.43.2 (Mask) image
6 1994.8.1 Mask This is a Mexican "Janus" mask. Janus is the Roman god of gates and doorways and he is portrayed by the mask having two faces, pointing in opposite directions. The right side of the mask is green and the left side is yellow. Both sides feature a painted eye in the socket, an eyehole under the painted eyebrow, a carved nose, red cheeks with black and white painted lines, a mouth with red lips, and a painted eye on the chin of each. Above each mouth is a painted mustache. There is a small hole in the top center of the forehead. This mask is carved out of wood and there is some damage on the raised parts of the mask. 1994.8.1 (Mask) image
7 1994.8.2 Mask This mask is from Mexico and is possibly a Juan negro mask. It resembles a man and is entirely painted brown or black. The mask features black carved sideburns, a mustache, and hair. There are eye holes for the mask wearer, and two smaller holes above the nose. The nose is large and carved from the wood, no nostrils. The mouth is slightly smiling but is not fully open.
