1 1983.22.1 Mask This mask is from Sri Lanka. It is probably a Raksha mask, which is used in festivals and cultural dances in Sri Lanka. This mask sports a turban on the head of the mask, patterned in diagonal red lines and green crosses. The face of the mask has two large bulging eyes that are painted yellow, red, and black. The mask has high eyebrows painted thinly over the eyes. There are eye slits underneath the eyes. The nose of the mask is large and features painted lines and nostrils. The mouth dons two large white buck teeth surrounded by the rest of the pink lips and mouth. There is a large black mustache with yellow lines painted over it above the mouth. The sides of the mask are present with multiple carving marks, almost like a turtle shell. 1983.22.1 (Mask) image
2 1983.6.6 Mask This mask is shaped like a human face. The entire mask is painted black, except for the inside. There are two eye holes painted white on the top lid and painted pink on the bottom line. The cheeks of the mask are painted pink. There is a block nose that ends in a mustache made of raffia. The raffia also joins the chin for a small beard. The chin points out. The mouth is a long and thin carved shape with down turned lips. Some white teeth are visible if one looks through the mustache. 3 1983.6.8 Mask This is a Mexican mask that could have belonged in the Dance of the Conquest, a traditional dance that reenacts invasions and conversions of the native populations. This mask has vertical lines of red, black, yellow and green. There are two curling horns near the temple of the mask that are also colored. There is a curling nose that is painted too. The mouth is a carved out oval, and above the mouth is a mustache made of beige and black colored straw material. The mask is carved out of wood and contains some damage to the paint.
4 1994.8.3 Mask This is a homemade ritual mask. This mask work is strikingly similar to the works of mask maker Ida Bagus Anom, who worked out of Bali. This mask is painted gray. It features long, thin eye slits that are painted red. There is some painted and carved lines of the face. There is a brown hide glued onto the mask where the eyebrows and mustache are present. The mouth of the mask is just one large red top lip that continues down the mask. Carved from wood, this mask has a few small scuff masks. 1994.8.3 (Mask) image
5 1994.8.4 Mask This is a homemade ritual mask from Indonesia. This mask is strikingly similar to the works of mask maker Ida Bagus Anom, who originated out of Bali. This mask is painted light pink, The eyes of the mask are thin and slightly curved upwards. There is painted eyelashes and other lines painted to portray lines in the face. There is a circular bump in the center of the forehead. The eyebrows and mustache are glued on hide that is brown in color. 6 1994.8.5 Mask Homemade ritual mask from Indonesia. This mask looks strikingly similar to the work of mask maker Ida Bagus Anom, who worked out of Bali. This mask is a grotesque portrayal of a human face but the features are exaggerated. There are two eyeholes that are painted red inside, furrowed eyebrows with black painted lines to suggest age. The nose is rounded and the nostrils are painted red inside. The mouth is open and smiling with six large teeth on the upper jaw. Six teeth are carved on the lower mouth piece. The color of the mask is an off-white almost turning brown color. The eyebrows and side burns are glued on, and both are white in color. 1994.8.5 (Mask) image
7 1997.4.8 Mask Pig's face mask carved from lightweight smooth grained wood. Mouth and eyes are carved open. Carving detail outlines ears, eyes, and tongue. Several teeth carved. Marked on the inside of the mask is: "Morelia -Macrh Mascara de Cerdo Madera "Pasqual" Francisco Ponce cost only 50 US cost 6 peso about 50 US" written in pencil and green pen. 8 2019-FIC-3 Mask This is a carved wooden mask possibly from Mexico City. The mask is an unknown animal. The animal has a wide nose with horizontal lines. Two bulging eyes are present under two eyeholes for the mask wearer. There are some drawing utensil marks on the eyeballs to show the dimensions of the eye. The mask has two long carved upturned ears, and between them in the center of the forehead are vertical lines and some carving work. The mouth of the mask is holdin a carved person. This person is smiling and has many carved face lines. The animal has carved teeth all around the person. There is either crudely carved hands or carved fish tails that are exiting the mouth from either side. The mask has many carving and writing utensil marks.
