1 1982.18.1 Mask This mask is from the state of Guerrero, Mexico. It is a rather large mask that has facial features of a human. This mask is painted mostly light green, sans for the hair of the mask, which is painted black with brown dirt in the crevasses. The mask has two eyes that are painted white and black, and eyelashes seem to be painted on the eyelid. There are two eye slits above the eyes so that the mask wearer can see. The mouth is large and contains two wide lips, painted green and brown with dirt. The nose is large and wide and there are carved nostrils. The beard and heard of the mask are carved vertical lines with some that curl into a circle. There is a hole in the center of the top of the mask and two holes on the cheeks. 1982.18.1 (Mask) image
2 1983.9.2 Mask This is a mask from Guatemala. It is large and contains two parts. The first part of the mask is the devil face. The mask shows a devil character painted in red and black. The devil has two blue eyes lined with red paint and black eye lashes. The nose of the devil is large and carved out nostrils are present, painted red. There is a small thin black mustache. The mouth of the devil is very large and open. It is showing all of its teeth, painted white, and the lips are painted red. There is a tongue in the center of the mouth painted red with a black line on it. The devil has a black beard and hair, carved out of the wood and painted black. The second part of the mask is a gray deer on top of the head of the devil. The deer has two blue eyes lined with red paint. Its snout is adorned with some black lines and the mouth of the deer is barely open but red paint can be seen in the mouth and in the nostrils. The deer has two antlers that are thick and painted white, carved from the same wood. The deer and devil both have carved ears with black lines in them. 1983.9.2 (Mask) image
3 1988.21.1 Mask This mask is carved from wood and has not been painted. It features the face of a person but all facial features are warped. The eyes are two circles in the middle of the mask with no observable eyebrows. The nose is wide and flat, and nose lines are seen on either side of the nose. The mouth is carved open but it is not see through. The chin juts out a bit. There are carved ears that are not in perfect placements to each other. The top of the mask contains a helmet for the mask that is connected by the same piece of wood. It covers the top of the head well, although if one were to wear the mask it would probably not be tight. 1988.21.1 (Mask) image
4 1993.43.3 Mask This mask is from Mexico and features a human head with two animals. The human head has all facial features. It contains two eyes that are lined in red and two eye slits above the eyes. There are no eyebrows. The nose is long and thin and there are carved nostrils in the mask. The mouth is a thin upturned smile painted red with no teeth showing. The hair of this mask is black carved vertical and curved lines, almost forming a hairstyle and horns of the same wooden carvings. The mask is colored beige and the bottom half of the mask is a much darker brown color. There are two animals present on the mask, assumingly pigs. The first pig is brown and is facing upwards from the center of the mask forehead. The pig has two eyes outlined in red, a snout with nostrils, an open mouth painted red, and two carved ears that have been broken off. The next animal is another pig, however this one is painted green and is present on the chin of the mask. This pig faces down and features all of the prior pigs additions, except the green pig has one of its ears fully intact. 5 1997.4.7 Mask This is a carved wood mask from Mexico. The wood is very light colored and there is no paint or extra additions to the mask. The mask has two bulging eyes and thin slits above for the mask wearer to see out of the mask. The nose is wide and has six indentations present, and no nostrils are carved. There appears to be an open mouth on this mask. There is a top lip that thins and curves outward. Inside of the mouth are two carved snakes that are descending from the top of the mask near its forehead. The snakes have carved eyes, mouths, and pattern features. The mask has two ears of an animal on the top, and between that is carved spikey hair. There are carved teeth in the mouth and two large sharp teeth are present at the bottom middle of the mouth. Along the outside of the mask are more carved indentations. Two holes are carved into the sides. On the back of the mask is the following, written in pen: "Patzuaro Michoacan 15 peso- 6 narco 1954 copalillo Madora Above is not correct" 1997.4.7 (Mask) image
