5 2024-3-30 Tree Georgian chichilaki, a handmade Christmas tree. It is a piece of wood shaved upward to have curled wood which hangs down to create the body of the tree. This piece of wood is nailed into a wooden circle which serves as a stand. Around the stand is a miniature wooden fence using wood shavings from the tree as the horizontal weaving between the fenceposts. Some chichilaki have this wooden fence and others do not. The top of the tree, above the curled wood, has a strand of red curling ribbon and black berries which are commonly added for decoration and to provide a nice smell. A little more curled wood is at the top of the tree directly below a wooden cross, a common Georgian tree topper. These can be made up to 7 feet tall. After the Christmas season they are burned to bring good luck in the new year. 2024-3-30 (Tree) image
