1 2022-29-1 Mask Face mask of this style from the Chokwe people in Angola represent young women and female ancestors. They are representative of ideal feminine beauty. This particular mask has a stylized coiffure with exaggerated, carved projections. The almond shaped eyes are mere slits for openings, the long, narrow nose bridge leads to small flared nostrils, and a open mouth with triangular pointed teeth. 2 2022-29-2 Mask This mask, known as a pwo, is a carved representation of the ideal female. It is a symbol of the ancestral mother. Masks are worn during initiation celebrations. This particular mask has a rather fierce expression with exaggerated raised eye brows, deep impressions under the eyes, and large open mouth displaying white teeth. Black fiber is used for the hair and modeled material was applied above the forehead with inset red glass. 3 2022-29-3 Mask This oval, wooden face mask has a fiber headdress and rows of trade beads hanging on either side of the mask. Two crescent shaped ears have holes for ornaments; the proper right has a twisted hide earring. The round eyes are set close together and are encircled with lines. The elongated, triangular nose has carved lines to indicate nostrils and the mouth is open exposing 11 teeth (1 missing).
