2 2022-29-4 Mask This mask is called pwo, referencing the feminine, the sacred mother. Masks such as this example were performed during initiation ceremonies. The vertical lines on either side of the face mask below the eyes is suggestive of tears. The pride and sorrow of the event. The elaborate coiffure is ornamented with trade beads, and the almond-shaped eyes are enhanced by the deep, arching eyebrow line. The mouth is slightly open, showing sharpened teeth. 3 2022-29-5 Mask Inscribed motifs on the mask's forehead and cheeks are features that aesthetically enhance a woman's beauty and were signs of ethnic identity. The central cruciform on the forehead has been interpreted as a cosmogram while the markings on either cheek are considered tears.
