1 2022-29-20 Ceremonial Spoon Large ceremonial, figurative spoons known as wakemia are unique to the Dan people and are used during feasts, in which women distributed rice to the audience. Carved from a single piece of wood, the scoop represents the head, the curved torso with two grooves on the front is the handle, and the stout squatting legs support the spoon. The back of the scoop has two parallel raised lines of alternative ridges. The ankles have ornamental rings and the genitalia indicate it is male. 2022-29-20 (Ceremonial Spoon) image
