1 1975.4.110 Certificate Teacher's certificate for Aletha Jacobs for Benton County, valid until Aug.15th,1902. Given at Vinton Iowa, April 26th,1902. Signed by C. R. Lowe, the county superintendent of schools. The page has a thick, black, decorative border and a background pattern tinted green. Aletha Hutchison Jacobs, born in Buchannan County, Iowa, was a teacher for rural schools in Benton County (1900-1902), Buchanan County (1902-1910), Black Hawk County (1912-1916), Grundy County (1916-1920), Wright County (1920-1921), and Webster County (1922). In 1922 she moved to Pennsylvania with her husband, Elmer. There she taught at Hummelstown High School in Dauphin County (1922-1924) and Reamstown School in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County (1926-1960).

Given on April 9th, 1902, in Vinton, Iowa. Signed by C. R. Lowe, the county superintendent. This object came with an envelope to Miss Sylvia Brochschink."

40 2021-1-259 Papers These 7 pages of seatwork papers were sent to Miss Slyvia Brockschink in Watkins, Iowa, from the Benton County Superintendent's Office in November, 1935. The first page has a poem, We Are Thankful! by Claude Weimer, with a drawing of turkeys, hay, and a pumpkin. The second page contains instructions on how to make a Thanksgiving basket. The third page includes instructions on how to make "Bozo the Twine Dog." The fourth and fifth pages contain the story, "I am Thankful Because-" about a thankful bear. The sixth page has some poems and quotes about fall and Thanksgiving. The last page contains a notice from Ella M. Mehlhaus that the next teachers meeting is to be held at the school building, Vinton. 
41 2021-1-261 Letter This letter was to the teachers of Benton County from Ella M. Mchlhaus in February of 1930, with the eight grade examination reports for the students, instructing the teachers that any grade below 70% must be rewritten in the May examination. This letter also included information about the Benton County and Des Moines Register Spelling Bee.  The back of the letter was entitled "Geography" and had twelve geography questions.

Edited by Florence Hale, L.H.D. 1934 Educational Publishing Corporation 425 Fourth Avenue, New York N. Y.  There are 80 pages in this book. The cover is orange and made of thick paper, and it is a bit dirty with some damage spots. 
43 2021-1-73 Bulletin "Rural Schools Bulletin" for January, 1936, published by Successful Farming, in Des Moines, Iowa. The front cover has an image of a person bending underneath a bridge in the winter. This bulletin was sent to Sylvia Brockschink from Watkins, IA. As a rural schoolteacher, Sylvia would have used the information in this bulletin for lesson plan ideas and to learn about new changes to the world of teaching and education. 
44 2021-1-79 Magazine The February edition of "School Arts," (Vol 35 No 6) by Art Integration Number cost 40 cents at the time when it was published. This magazine was published every month except for July and August and contained images of student artwork that teachers could look at and replicate as art activities in their own classrooms. The top left corner on the front cover reads, "Sylvia Brockschink."
45 2021-1-81 Booklet This Instructor's Handbook, "Handwork for All Grades," was published in 1937 by F.A. Owen Publishing Co., Dansville, N.Y. As a part of the "Instructor Handbook Series," this was specifically made up of ideas for seatwork for teachers to give to their students. "Sylvia Jane Brockschink, July 1937" is handwritten on the top of the front cover. Contains primarily paper dolls for students to do relating to several countries (China, Japan, Peru, Switzerland, Sweden), months (October - June), and the circus. Softback, originally bound with three staples, 96 pages.  Sylvia Brockschink Schulte attended school near Norway, Benton County, Iowa, in the 1930s before attending Iowa State Teachers College in 1939. She went on to be a rural school teacher in Iowa. 
46 2021-1-84 Notebook This workbook, "A Work Book in American History," by Southworth and Southworth, published in 1936 by the Iroquois Publishing Company, was the property of Sylvia Brochschink while she was in Norway, Iowa. This workbook could be used by teachers in instructing American History, and students with the same copy could fill out the answers as the class learned, as this appears to be a type of guided notetaking. Softback, brown covers, metal spiral binding. 
47 2021-1-99 Book 1892-1900 teacher's class record book for the Excelsior school, Iowa. Teachers were Agnes May, Anna Sullivan, Kate Walker, Jessie Shurrier, and Margurita T. Ryan. Harback, red patterned cover, black spine, bound with three staples. "Iowa Edition" published by W. M. Welch, Chicago, Ill. The front cover has sticker that reads, "Property of Sylvia (Brockschink) Schulte Welch's System Classification, Graduation, and Close Supervision Permanent Record and Duplicate Reports School and Township Reports Excelsior School 1892-1900." Sylvia Jane Brockschink Schulte, born in Norway, Benton County, attended Iowa State Teacher's College, and taught in rural and elementary schools near Walford, Iowa. After nine years of teaching she shifted to a long career with local 4H clubs.

The first inside page has a drawing of a heart with an arrow through it and three pairs of feet inside it. The second page has a drawing of a large hreat and several smaller, red hearts, with an arrow through each. The letter reads, "Miss Holland, I am sure that we will all miss you very much, at least I will. I will write you letters to you every month. Love your student, Jeanette Solbery." The card is part of a larger collection in an envelope labeled "May 1961, Third Grade students, Vinton Iowa", which contains several pieces of art from students wishing Miss Holland luck on marriage but they're sad she was moving away.

It features a crayon drawing of a white house in the center of the page with a red car, garden, and big, green yard as well as a bunch of trees to the right and a tall red building on the left. The back reads, "x stands for kiss." All text is handwritten in either red or blue crayon.
