Some of the stories include Gingerbread man, Columbus, Santa Claus, Thanksgiving Day, a Child's prayer, When Washington Was a Boy & The Legend of Hiawatha. The front cover is brown and has a black line going around it to form a box. Inside the box in black is "The Expressive readers Third reader." there is a pencil marking through the "D" in third and the first "R" in "Reader". Below this is an upside down triangle also in black. Inside the triangle are three chiuldren also drawn in black. Their clothes are colored orange. Below the triangle is a leaf and orange drawing. In the center of these two drawings it reads "Baldwin & Bender. Third Reader" in black. Back cover has a drawing of a book with wings and rays of light behind it. The inside cover page has written at top right in pencil "Anna Flom Wesley Iowa. 1919." The back inside page has written in pencil at top left "Dec. 14." 7 1988.33.27 Book "The Beacon First Reader" by James H. Fassett. 160 pp. Illus in color and in b/w. There are 3 parts. The first part contains stories such as "This Little Pig Went to Market", "Old Mother Hubbard", "Chicken Licken", etc. The second part has "The Little Red hen", "Twinkle, Twinkle", "Mary Had a Little lamb", etc. The 3rd part is a phonetic table. The cover of the book is dark green and has a black flowery pattern going around it. In the center is "The Beacon First Reader." Under this is a candlestick-like object. The cover drawings are worn so it is hard to see the picture clearly. The inside cover page has written n pencil "Ethel Flom, Wesley, Iowa 1927, 45" Below this are some scribbles. There is also scribbling on the inside cover. The back cover page has written in pencil "good, good, good, good, good." There is also "good" written in red crayon. Those that are included are William Tell, Rip Van Winkle, The Little Kittens, Jack & the Bean Stalk, Robinson Crusoe and also a phonentic table. The outside cover is green and has a dark green design all the way around it. Inside the design stands what could be a torch. The torch is done in dark green and has visible pencil markings on it. It also has smoke going up from it. Written on top of the smoke in dark green "The Beacon Third Reader." At the top of the spine in dark green reads "Beacon Third Reader" then a little flower and below that in dark green "Fassett." On the inside cover page in the top right corner written in pencil is "Ethel Flom Sept. 10, 1928 Wesley, Iowa". The back cover pages have many pencil markings & scribbles. Also there are dates written down from Jan. 4 to Jan. 18 & Sept. 24 - Jan. 3. Next to some of these dates is written "good" "very good" also in pencil. A few dates have pencil drawn stars. Color: GR

The outside cover is faded, but there is a floral design all the way around the book. In the center is "The New Beacon Reader". Under that is a candle in a candlestick. There is a trail of smoke going upward toward the title. The candlestick looks to be traced in pencil & the flame from the candle & the smoke is colored. The cover page has pencil marking and "Ethel" written at the top. Color: GR

Section 6 has happy, merry stories , Section 7 has stories of outdoors. Section 8 has stories of past historical importance. Section 9 has stories of other countries and times and Section 10 deals with stories about America. The outside cover is brown and has a black line going around it. In the center in black is "Story Hour Readings". Below that is an oval. Inside the oval is a boy sitting in a tree reading a book. Under that is "Fifth Year". At the bottom is "Hartwell." The inside cover has written in black ink "Ethel Marie Flom, Wesley, Iowa, 1930." The back cover has in the center a book that is lying open. On each side is a feathered wing. The front cover is ornately decorated and the drawing inside the border looks like a flame and smoke emitting from it. The binding also reads "Beacon Fourth Reader" and the author's name is underneath. On the bottom is Ginn and Company. The back is very plain. A stamp is on the first page and proclaims the owner of the book. Inside are several short stories by various authors and they are accompanied by illustrations. The pages are sleek and shiney. In the center is a stand with an orb on top of it with flames and smoke rising up behind the title. On the binding is "Beacon Third Reader", "Fasset" and "Ginn and Company" on the bottom. The back is blank and is stained white, possibly from wear. A pencil mark is near the top left corner on the back cover. The front cover, binding and edges have also worn with age and have white spots. On the inside front cover is handwritten "Muriel Johnson Steimez, Jan. 1922 and 51. Loose leaf notes are in between  pages 41 and 42. Book is 64 pages.

The text is in black print. The interior cover has pictures from famous children fables; some of the pictures are colored in with pencil. "Mrs. Eugene Huck" is written in blue ink on the top right corner. Some of the pages are torn and repaired with tape. Book is 123 pages.

Front cover is a yellow/orange color with a picture of two childern reading in a triangle. Cover is extremely faded. "Miss Shirley Ann" is written on the interior cover. Book is 370 pages including index. 
38 2016-FIC-37 Book Harper's Fifth Reader is a collection of readings by American authors. There are a few articles by presidents including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln. There are 90 articles and the book is 510 pages including the notes. A sticker is on the front cover that says, "$1.00." "I-69" is written on the interior cover. Leaves were flattened between pages 242 and 243. The chemicals from the leaves have bleed through to the surrounding pages. Cover is green with an elegant design encapsulating the title.
