1 1997.29.1 Statue As one of the best known Greek dramatists, Sophocles’ impact on literature has lasted 2,400 years. With innovations ranging from scene painting to the introduction of the third actor, he was able to develop complex plots. Out of 120 tragedies, only seven exist in their entirety, with those dealing with the reign of King Oedipus being the most famous. This sculpture was part of the educational artwork purchased by President Seerley for the library, now Seerley Hall, between 1920 and 1928. It stood at the entrance until 1964 when building renovations necessitated the change of ownership to the UNI Museum.
