A set of three slate pencils (A-C) from the late nineteenth century. The bottom of the pencils are gray and the top sections are wrapped in an American flag design. Children used these writing utensils to write on their slates in school. This method was much cheaper than writing on paper as students could erase their boards after showing the teacher their work.
