In 1944, Thomas Edmund Dewey was the Republican candidate for President, but lost to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Dewey was the closest candidate to run against Roosevelt in his four presidential elections. Thomas E. Dewey rain again in 1948 for the Republican candidate but lost to the incumbent president Harry S. Truman making it one of the greatest upsets in presidential election history.
