The 1972 gubernatorial election ,which was the last election on a two-year cycle, changed to a four- year terms for governors. In Iowa, Robert D. Ray was the current governor who won his third four-year term beating Paul Franzenburg who was the democratic candidate. Four years earlier Ray defeated Franzenburg for governor.
