Teacher's certificate for Aletha Jacobs to teach third grade in Buchanan County, valid until April 1, 1903. Signed in Independance, Iowa, Oct. 1, 1902, by M. J. Goodrich, the county superintendent. Results of the teachers exam are listed near the bottom of the paper. The page has a blue tint, a thick, black, decorative border, an illustration of an eagle in the center, and an illustration of a badge in the bottom left corner.

Aletha Hutchison Jacobs, born in Buchannan County, Iowa, was a teacher for rural schools in Benton County (1900-1902), Buchanan County (1902-1910), Black Hawk County (1912-1916), Grundy County (1916-1920), Wright County (1920-1921), and Webster County (1922). In 1922 she moved to Pennsylvania with her husband, Elmer. There she taught at Hummelstown High School in Dauphin County (1922-1924) and Reamstown School in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County (1926-1960).
