Engineering survey level, thought to have been used in railroad construction. a. Surveyor's telescopic scope; brass metal construction, milled to fit swivel base; adjustable eyepiece and end-sleeve; brass adjustment knobs (1/4" diameter) in front of eyepiece; underside of scope fitted with vertical screw and adjustment knobs and square bracket for attachment of scaled level. b. Front lens cover; brass metal cap, 3 vertical cuts on side knurled forward edge; interior surface stamed "O". c. Level; brass metal cylinder, liquid filled, clear glass top; brass metal ruled scale on top edge; fittings at ends for attachement to surveyors' scope. d. Swivel arm & adjustable base; horizontal brass metal tapered arm, vertical hinged clamp (yoke) for attaching of surveyors' scope; swivel arm turns on a double brass metal adjustable base plate, tension & directional adjustment knobs on upper plate, 4 level adjustment knobs between upper & lower base plastes, Iowa State Teachers College inventory sticker on upper plate, No. "10054", underside of lower base plate stamped with serial no. "10687". e. Screwdriver; round wooden handle, short steel blade, metal collar at end of handle stamped "Tuck". f. Adjustmen tool; small steel rod used to make adjustments on level, blued metal. g. Adjustment tool; small steel rod used to make adjustments on level, tapered at ends, faded blued metal. h. Carrying case; varninshed wooden box dovetail corner joins hinged lid; brass metal hinges, lock, latches & metal fittings, 4 circular rubber pads on bottom, 2 leather pads on inside lid; interior designed, fitted & padded with green felt to secure engineer's level; brass flange on bottom interior compartments for accessories & tools; maker's label inside lid, "W. & L. E. Gurley's Instrument manufactory, Established 1845, W. & L. E. Gurley, Manufacturers of Civil Engineers; and Surveyors' Instruments Troy N. Y. U.S.A.; brown leather carrying strap attached to exterior ends of box (strap is broken below metal buckle).
