"Elect Hughes Governor". Charles Evans Hughes was the 36th governor of New York. Elected in 1907 with a campaign to improve the standard of living in New York (similar to reforms that were happening in Britain at the time). Taft offered Hughes the vice-president nomination in 1908, but he turned it down to run for Governor again and was heavily supported by Theodore Roosevelt. Hughes served as Governor until October of 1910 when he took over as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
