This is a newspaper article about Irene Olson, the 1929 Iowan spelling champion entitled, "President Hoover Greets Iowa's Champion Speller". This also includes all of the words that had been used in the semi-finals in The Register (Des Moines) state spelling bee the prior year that had been prepared by Dr. Horn of the University of Iowa. The back of the paper includes an outline of the next spelling bee program: Friday Night April 25th- Banquet for Spellers and a theatre party, Saturday Morning April 26th- left open for sellers and parents who wish to shop or see the town, and Saturday Afternoon April 27th- Spelling Bee state finals begin at 1:30. The paper also states that the state winner would go to Washington, DC and that the party would leave Des Moines on May 24th and arrive in Washington on May 26, in time for the national bee the next day. The rest of the week is open for sightseeing.
