Chinese Opera Mask. The mask is enclosed in a wooden frame and glass in order to protect the object. The mask depicts Sun Shangxiang. Sun Shangxiang was the daughter of a Chinese warlord, Sun Jian. She is often depicted as a tomboy as she received extensive martial arts training and her maidservants all wielded weapons, which was strange for her time. Her name, written in Chinese, can be found next to the mask itself. The mask was given to the University of Northern Iowa as a gift from Shanghai Dianji University.
