World War II U.S. military mess fork. "U.S." is imprinted into the handle of the fork. Opening at the end of the fork for ease of carrying and storing. M-1926 style military fork. This type was made of corrosive resistant steel and was approved by the military for use beginning in late 1944. Forks had previously been made of silver plating and tin before that. This fork was manufactured by the SILCO company, formally the SILCO USA Division of International Silver Company. This type of fork was used by the U.S. military from 1945 to 2002 when the military switched to using plastic silverware.
