Fragments of a mastodon tusk. The mastodons were relatives of true elephants, which included the wooly mammoth. These huge elephant-like animals roamed across much of eastern North America during the latter part of the Ice Age. Most mastodon remains which are found date to between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago.
