RSC-FIC-19 (Map)

1937 Map titled "Growth of the Great West," part of the "Sanford-Gordy American History Series: with European Background and Beginnings." Published by A. J. Nystrom & Co., Chicago. It features two equally sized maps (labeled A and B) that compare the west of 1870 and the west "today" (1930s). Map A, "The Great West 1870," marks land in each state/territory in yellow versus land sold or otherwise disposed of in blue. It also shows different railroad lines built by 1870 that were either made on land that was forfeited or unforfeited. Map B, "The Great West Today" breaks up the states by percentage of public lands in that section. It also shows the railway lines, most of which still being in the Midwest, though western cities were starting to have more lines. The map folds down into its attached, brown folder titled "SG 17 Growth of Great West" and "Maps and chart for Teaching of the Social Studies." Unfolded it measures approximately 97cm tall x 124cm wide.
