1 2024-3-10 Horn Georgian Khantsi - animal horn with silver metal base. Horn is brown and white with metal scrollwork at the ends. The large end of the horn is open and can be seen inside. The horn has a metal stand which has a flat base and a metal ring the horn fits through. This stand can be separated from the horn. The stand matches the metal scrollwork. Many are hung on a wall using an attached chain, and much earlier they were hung from belts when being transported. Many khantsis do not have a stand like this one does. The khantsi was used to hold Georgian wine when making toasts at a supra. The alcohol had to be drunk fully before setting it down. Most toasts are made with wine but toasts for victory over enemies are made with beer. This khantsi is likely made of ram's horn because of the grooves on the bottom and the curvature of it. All khantsi are decorated ornately, this one being decorated with a grape motif on the outside decorations, common in Georgia. 2024-3-10 (Horn) image
