Teacher's certificate for Aletha Jacobs to teach second grade in Buchanan County, valid until April 1, 1905. Signed in Independance, Iowa, Aug. 1, 1904, by M. J. Goodrich, the county superintendent. Results of the teacher's exam are listed near the bottom of the paper beside a column that reads "Insitute Record: 1904, Member of the A grade, Term of institute 6 days, No. days attended: 6, No. terms taught: 9." The page has a slight pink tint, a thick, black, decorative border, an illustration of an eagle in the center, and an illustration of a flag and field in the bottom left corner.

Aletha Hutchison Jacobs, born in Buchannan County, Iowa, was a teacher for rural schools in Benton County (1900-1902), Buchanan County (1902-1910), Black Hawk County (1912-1916), Grundy County (1916-1920), Wright County (1920-1921), and Webster County (1922). In 1922 she moved to Pennsylvania with her husband, Elmer. There she taught at Hummelstown High School in Dauphin County (1922-1924) and Reamstown School in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County (1926-1960).
