1992.33.2.2 (Scale)

Scale made from a hollowed, carved gourd and a heavier, wooden scale mechanism. The wooden mechanism has a large block on the end of the right side. The top is smooth and carved starting with a "T". Finger must be placed in one of the divots on the back in order to balance correctly. The stem of the mechanism has dots to measure weight. Dots go numerically from one to four and then skip to six. Carved above the six dots are the roman numerals "M" and "XII". There is a dot between "XII" and another "M" with two dots to the left of the top "M" and one above the point on the right. Weighted block is carved from a single chunk of wood and is not finished. There is a hole drilled through the left side of the mechanism with three strands of cotton yarn and knotted on top. The three strands are entwined and split to tie in three different holes in a large gourd bowl. The gourd has been carved in half and hollowed out. There is a number "2" written in pencil next to one of the strands of yarn. There is a singular loop of the same cotton yarn that is tied around the three strands. The gourd has a crack in the bottom and one on the side slightly below the "2". The outside of the gourd is speckled in different shades of tan and brown.
