1997.4.14 (Paddle)

Wooden canoe paddle. One end wide and pointed, decorated in circular pattern with 6 petals revealed by darkening areas between them. narrow line scored into wood 1" from edge. Handle portion of this end rounded and smooth.; Other end is narrower and rounded. A 12" x 1/2" channel has been cut through the wood. Each end is a circle 5/8" in diameter. A similar size circle has been left in the wood at the center of the opening. A narrow line is incised 5/8" from the edge. Handle portion at this end has squared edge. Marked by the collector in red "Procured at the Durka bush Negro village Santigran on the gold river village Saramaaca 1964. This is the same village where I procured the dugout canoe."
