The encrusted wooden Fang Byeri reliquary head was made to sit with its neck inserted into the lid of a bark reliquary box that held the selected remains, most often skull fragments, of an honored ancestor; the container was seen as the torso completed the head positioned at the summit. Never intended to depict individuals, the maker captures only the "essence" of a living being.
