This mask, known as a pwo, is a carved representation of the ideal female. It is a symbol of the ancestral mother. Masks are worn during initiation celebrations. This particular mask has a rather fierce expression with exaggerated raised eye brows, deep impressions under the eyes, and large open mouth displaying white teeth. Black fiber is used for the hair and modeled material was applied above the forehead with inset red glass. Remains of white paint run down the center of the forehead, nose, and chin.
