This mask is called pwo, referencing the feminine, the sacred mother. Masks such as this example were performed during initiation ceremonies. The elaborate coiffure is ornamented with trade beads, and the almond-shaped eyes are enhanced by the deep, arching eyebrow line. The mouth is slightly open, showing sharpened teeth.
