8713 2022-27-37 Dulcimer Appalachian dulcimer, unrelated to the hammered dulcimer, made from wood. Body/soundbox is long and ellipse or "boat" shaped, it has 2 heart-shaped soundholes near the middle of the body, placed on either side of the neck. The "neck" is rectangular with a half-circle scoop near the bottom where the instrument would traditionally be plucked, it is centered over the soundbox and has 17 unevenly spaced metal frets. At the top of the neck is the headstock, which contains 4 cylindrical tuning pegs with rectangular heads; there is an ornamental carving of a woman's head at the end of the headstock, she has long hair that curls at the end, a pointed nose, and an open mouth. At the bottom of the neck is a small bridge, followed by the tailblock, which has 4 wooden pegs where the strings wrap around. There are 4 metal strings, 2 of which have what appears to be small pieces of pipe cleaner wrapped around them where they wrap around their wooden pegs on the tailblock. Carving on the back of the headstock reads "Martin original Craftsman Swannanoa, N.C."
8714 2022-27-77 Drum Small gourd drum. Gourd is dried, hollowed, and cut into a half circle, the outside of the has been carved with various designs, including a cross-hatched pattern around the head of the drum; there is a small hole in the bottom. The drum head is made from a light tan hide which is held in place with 8 nails and two strips of leather which are woven between the nail heads.
8715 2022-27-86 Drum Two-headed drum made from a Hind Brand Buxton Lime container. The container is made of metal which has been painted a reddish brown color; there is a yellow painted logo on one side of the drum depicting a hooved animal jumping, on the opposite side of this there are painted yellow numbers and letters, possibly meant to identify the product; there is a navy blue ring painted around one end of the container. The two heads are made from different materials; one head is made from a reddish brown leather which has been stretched and held in place with a thick, dark leather that is woven around the edges of the head; the other head is made from a thin animal skin parchment and is stretched and held in place with a rolled up piece of plaid fabric which has been wrapped in more animal skin parchment, it is unclear whether this head is attached via weaving, sewing, or some form of adhesive. The two heads are further secured and attached to one another with what appears to be gut thread that is woven through the material surrounding each head; a leather strip is wrapped around each set of the gut thread, this likely allows for the drum to be tuned. 2 loops of thick twine have been tied around the gut thread, 1 on each head, near the logo, 2 strips of fabric, one red and white, one blue and white, have been tied together and through these loops, forming a strap to carry, wear, or hang the drum.
