163 1993.37.1 Robe Sand dollar print. Everyday cotton type. Designs in the yukata run the length of the yukata, parallel to each other. They are: white circles on a light blue background 4" wide, then a white stripe 1 1/2" side, followed by a section of white sand dollars against a dark blue background. Each sand dollar has light blue detail within it. This section is 6 1/2' side. "Grant" is written along the inside of the collar in black permanent ink. "Japan" is written in blue permanent ink along the bottom hem. A belt in the sand dollar design is attached by stitching in a star shape with 8 points. It is attached at the center of the yukata. The yukata is precisely square, The sleeves are sewn into enclosed squares that allow the wearer to carry items in the sleeves. Color: BL,WH
164 1993.37.10 Bag Bag, man's shoulder. It is a very fine crochet stitch. Brown circle is at the bottom, 2" in diameter, followed by light brown. As the circles progress up the length of the bag, they begin to look like stripes. The strap uses the same colors of light and dark brown. It is woven at the shoulder but is just single strands of cotton-like fiber where the strap is attached to the bag. "Colombia" is written in permanent marker along the inside top hem of the bag. 165 1993.37.17 Braid Pigtail braid. 3 strands black string tied together at top. At bottom, raindrop shaped piece wrapped with dark yellow thread. The bottom tip of the raindrop is wrapped with a gold weave. Underneath it is a star fruit-shaped bead. This bead is missing on one of the strands. A pyramid sequence of gold beads follow, then a line of small, circular red beads. Black string tassels follow the red beads. The ends are decorated with glass and light-weight metal beads. A pink sticky liquid has had contact with the scarf. Three areas of the scarf have this substance on it. The border of the scarf is marked with a narrow border of 1/4" wide lace. "India" is printed in pink permanent ink on an iron-on label that is found along the border of the scarf. Color: WH

The design is tightly arranged designs of plants vines and flowers. The collar is also bordered with the gold thread border. The border continues on the inside hem behind the buttons and buttonholes halfway down and is exposed near the neck where the shirt opens at the center. Buttons are covered with the gold embroidery. Decorative thick white thread is around the sides of the body & sides of hood and along bottom of cape and between the hood and the body. 5" flowers mark the bottom corners of the hood and a larger, 7 1/2" flower is in the center of the hood. On the 2 bottom corners of the cape there are flowers, each 5 3/4" high. The center flower in the back is 8 1/2" high. The body of the cape is gathered where it meets the hood. It is lined with an aqua-mauve colored fabric. "Iran" is written in black permanent marker along the inside bottom on the lining. There is no closing for the cape. Color: RD,WH

177 1994.2.1.2 Tunic Sleeveless. Hand embroidered panel on breast. Basically square silhouette, with two edge straps at bottom. Primary embroidery is a mosiac with squares inter-mixing linear and geometric patterns. Orange on indigo blue background. Lateral outside edges of breast panel has 4 embroidered squares on each side. Bottom of panel has embroidered strip fringed by denim-like fabric with additional embroidery. This area forms a flap that is not attached to the straps that make up the lateral edges of the tunic. Back panel is undecorated. White cotton label attached to back with blue print containing Chinese headints with #32 wrtten in red in, and #103-1 in black ink. Tunic unfastened at bottom. Fraying, puckers and pulls. Black thread loops tacked on at shoulders. Color: ML

187 1994.7.3 Robe Body of the robe is made of blue silk shot with gold thread which forms designs (dragons, sea foam, flowers). At end of sleeve is an approx. 8" extension of sleeves, made of black silk patterned by groups of three bands of wide gold thread. Below this black extension is a cuff of irregular shape to drape over hand. It is made of black silk with gold designs, the same as found in the body of the garment. A 3/4" band is attached at the edge of the cuff. This material is also patterned, but differently from the body dragon design. It is difficult to ascertain the original color of the background or pattern thread in this band, since they now seem faded. At the neck, the top of the garment has a 3.75" yoke made like the cuff (band of black silk with gold thread in dragon pattern, edged at neck by narrow band of faded patterned silk). The front closure starts at the neck and quickly angles to the right side of the garment. 5 small brass droplet buttons with cut-outs and animal (?) designs are found at the neck and down the side of the garment. These fit into long cord-loops. A small pocket is found on the center of the right front flap of the robe which hangs inside or under the left front side. 20" slits are foud at the front and gack of the robe. Color: BL,BK,GD

Beneath the red square an orange strip sewn from inside corner to outside corner and is sewn securely at the outside corner. The strap extends 54" beyond the outside corner and 13" beyond the inside corner of the red square. This strip is used to secure the bundle once full. Color: OR,RD

193 1997.27.2B Suit Sleeveless garment worn by pulling on over the head. Garment is made of long, narrow woven strips of cotton 8 7/8" wide. These strips are machine stitched together along their long axes to form a large flared rectangular garment. Each piece of material has alternating stripes of purple & brown. Stripes measure 1" for purple and 1 1/2" for brown stripes. The neckline of the garment has green stitching going around it and down to the chest. The chest & stomach area have stitched green geometric designs, 11 in all. The center has two pockets with openings 5 1/2" x 1". The back has the same geometric designs, just below the neck, as is seen on the front. The armholes and bottom of the garment have different cotton of red and white stripes around the openings. The pockets & inside neck area are lined with blue cotton. b. Pants are of the same material & design as a. & c. Waist band is blue cotton and is 3 3/4" wide. Waist band is constructed with elastic. The front waist band has a triangle cut out where the elastic can be pulled to tighten the waist of the pants. c. Hat is made of same material as a. and b. & has same stripes. Two vertical panels are sewn together. The top of the hat is curved & closed while the bottom is open, and each side comes to a sharp point at its terminus. Color: BR,PR,BL,GR
194 1997.4.18 Slingshot Long braided cord at each end of crocheted medallion, 7" x 3 1/2", both made from a combination of dark and natural unscoured wool from unknown animal. Medallion has decorative pattern and a 2" slit for insertion of stone. Cord at one end divided into smaller cords for about 1/2" forming a loop 2 1/2" from end. Other end appears to have been originally half of the length of the other and has been extended to same length, using the same colors of fiber, but with a much simpler, cruder technique that creates a softer, looser cord.
