1 2023-FIC-14 Medal Silver dux medal from Mauchline School in Mauchline, Scotland. Medal was won by James Love and presented by Marcus Bain, the executive chairman of the Mauchline School Board and the owner of Ballochmyle quarries in Mauchline. Dux medals in Scotland were awarded to the highest-achieving student in the school each year. The medal is oval in shape with decorative embossing around the edges and lettering on both sides . A red and gray ribbon is attached to the top of the medal. An insignia on the medal indicates that it was made by William Aitken, a silversmith in Birmingham, England who was active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  2023-FIC-14 (Medal) image
2 2023-FIC-17 Medal Silver medal presented to Nancy P. Walton for superior scholarship, 1840, from Benjamin Whittemore, Nicholas Noyes, and Otis A. Skinner of the Sub-Committee of the Hawes School. The medal is octagonal in shape with writing etched on both sides and a purple ribbon attached to the top. The Hawes School was one of the first public schools founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1830. Both boys and girls attended the school until a separate school was created for the girls in 1848.  Among other reasons, the Hawes School is notable as being one of the first public schools in the United States to introduce music education programs to its students in the late 1830s.  2023-FIC-17 (Medal) image
