2 1970.36.116 Hat German police shaki ( helmet). Black hard leather. Metal crest on center front reads, "Mit gott far konig und vater land 1860", and in Latin "Suum Cuique". Air circulation holes on either side above temples. Metal posts extend outward above ears (presumably once holding a chin strap). Above metal crest is small notch for plume insert. 3 1978.31.8 Helmet Pith sun helmet (World War II); olive green felt body; green leather trim on brim; exterior dark green felt hat band; 2" ventilation knob on top; black, white & red striped metal shield on right side; black & silver Nazi eagle & swastika shield on left side. Green leather chin strap with metal buckle & fittings; dark green cotton cloth lining; leather headband & metal fittings; red felt liner-head-support; aluminum wheel at center top for adjusting & removing ventilation knob. 4 1992.29.4 Helmet Pith Helmet used during the Gulf War. Sometimes referred to as a topee or topi hat and is made out of the pith of the sola plant, and is worn in tropical countries for protection against the sun.
