1993.24.226 (Card)

Valentine's card handmade with two pieces of brown construction paper tied together on the left-hand side with red thread. The edges are trimmed into a pattern. The cover says "My Valentine, To my little sweetheart," and has a cut-out illustration of a blonde girl drawn in crayon on lined notebook paper holding a cut-out red heart. Inside, the right page says, "To the teacher." The left page reads, "To my darling, darling, that's the word I love. All new fashioned words above, Of love that's fervent it doth tell. Let such love between us dwell, Darling, that's the word I love."

This was among a series of cards from the Barck family. Harry Barck was the secretary for the District Board of Education for Eddy #6 school, Cedar Falls Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa. He married Pauline Heckel, a teacher for rural schools in Bremer County and an Iowa State Normal School alumna. They had two children, Philip and Frances, who donated this item as part of the Harry Barck collection.
