Waffen SS Croatian volunteer sleeve shield. The Independent State of Croatia was part of the Axis powers during World War II, and Croatians fought either in the Croatian forces or volunteered for the Nazi forces, including the Waffen SS as in this instance. The Croatians fought largely on the Eastern Front. This shield is red and white checked on a black fabric background. The red and white checkered pattern is the main portion of the Independent State of Croatia's coat of arms.
