76 2024-1-35 Pillowcase Homemade blue pillowcase with the back side being darker navy blue compared to the front side's royal blue. There is a fringe of gold and blue alternating colored cord sewn on all four edges of the top blue fabric. These cord pieces are sewn on with gold, blue, and white threads. The fringe pieces appear to have been rolled individually and sewn on at their proximal ends to prevent fraying. The blue front side has multiple aspects to the decorations on it. In the top left corner is a depiction of the U.S. Army Seal. It shows a flying eagle carrying an olive branch with its right foot and arrows with its left foot. It is holding a banner in its mouth which, in the seal, says "E Pluribus Unum", or "out of many, one". Here the banner is an outline and does not have any words. This eagle has three red and white vertical stripes on its shield and there are eight spots inside a circle above its head of a halo-like shape and placement. The eagle's head is facing its right (toward the branches). Arcing across the pillowcase is the white text "U.S. Army" in block letters. Around the words are four roses on white stems matching the white text. The petals are painted with red paint, the same as the red stripes on the Army Seal. On the right lower half of the pillowcase is a poem offset in a rectangle outline -- both the text and outline are the same white color and the text is in uppercase. The poem says "To my wife / tho far away from you I seem / each night I see you in a dream / the rose long famed for it's grace / is not as nice as your dear face / and when my work o'er here / is through / I'll hurry home / to be with you". Across the bottom of the pillowcase is the text "Camp Hood, Texas" in a long decorative oval, again being in white. The back side of the pillowcase has fabric which is slightly ribbed but it is slippery in texture so it feels smooth. Two thirds of the bottom back seam are open for the pillow to fit inside. The fabric is in one piece with some stretching along it where was folded. Both sides have creases from being folded. This includes some loss of the text going along the creases on the front side. The text and shapes on the front side were affixed using flocking, a process of using a stencil and spray to create the pattern through the stencil. Some discoloration around the shapes is visible and there is more on the back side of the fabric. Camp Hood in Texas was created in 1942 and is still in use today but it is called Fort Cavazos now. This fort was a training center for tank destroyer battalions during World War II. 2024-1-35 (Pillowcase) image
77 2024-3-15 Saddle Bag Georgian saddle bag. Red and green braided cord runs the long edges and is sewn on to the main portion of the fabric with brown and some light pink thread and fraying from being repaired. The outside has embroidered triangular patterns in red, brown, gray, blue, and orange threads. The patterns are similar on both sides which are the pockets. The center is a different pattern but uses the same colors. These type of colors and patterns are common in the cultures of Eastern Europe. Inside one of the pockets were some green and yellow leaves and a dried pea pod. These are stored in a plastic bag with it. These bags were carried around on the person's arm when not on the horse as a typical saddle bag. Was likely used as a mat to sleep on because of its thickness. From the same shop as the carpet, object 2024-3-19. 2024-3-15 (Saddle Bag) image
