1 2015-3-2A Dolls, Ibeji Two wooden standing male figures on round bases. Hands are resting on their hips with legs apart. The legs are rather short and arms elongated. Classic Yoruba vertical and horizontal scarification marks appear on both dolls with one face totally washed away from use. Glass beads appear around their neck and ankles. The complex coiffure is colored with blue indigo. Both figures are in good condidtion with erosion to one coiffure and split behind right shoulder of the other. 3 2015-3-9 Cup Large wooden drinking cup with round flared base and double ring at the base. Classic Kuba linear scars on both cheeks and riple eyebrow markings and geometric markings below the rim. 4 2017-26-13 Chair The pleasingly carved, three-legged wooden Nyamwezi chair depicts a male figure rising from the back of the stool and ending with the headas athe topmost element in the design. Reserved for the chief only, the high back 'stool' in human shape features a bust portrait with carved head and neck that has been adorned with beaded necklace. Carved from a single piece of hard wood, the bust portion of the chair comprises the seat back. A circular hole in the center of the rounded seat and the three curvilinear legs of the stool, with raised decoration of vertical linear pattern carvings, rests on a convex base. 2017-26-13 (Chair) image
5 2017-26-20 Guardian Figure The wooden Fang reliquary figure depicts a standing male guardian. Looking straight ahead with convex attached metal eyes; his mouth opens under the bulbous nose, created a stunned expression on his otherwise expressionless face. The wide-eyed stare also lends infantile quality to the ancestral likeness that would have been appreciated by the Fang. 2017-26-20 (Guardian Figure) image
6 2017-26-6 Female Caryatid Stool The round based, dark brown painated femal caryatid chief stool depicts a kneeling nude female figure that makes reference to matrilineal dynastic succession. The seat of this royal Luba stool is supported by the female figure that balances it on her head and the tips of her elongated fingers. Her small, ample body is detailed with elaborate scarification markings on the face, abdomen, and back that were regarded to enhance a woman's body as signs of beauty and civilization. The maker favors the use of solid volumes and combines elegance and balance to portray the power and stability of the female figure. Three wristbands decorate each of her enlarged arms, and her donward pointing breasts leads the viewers eye to the beautiful scarifications that ornament the belly. Her elongated hairstyle provides visual balance when observing the stool from either side, sweeping backward from her head. 7 2019-7-14 Helmet Mende helmet made of coated, carved wood, raffia and dye. Helmet has metal earrings. Carved design of helmet is a head with two pointed, braided knots for "hair". Displayed on contemporary iron stand.  2019-7-14 (Helmet) image

9 2021-19-4 Figure Fertility figurine doll from the Ashanti people of Ghana. This figure made out of wood was used as a fertility blessing and was meant to be carried around and touched. There is a flat disk head with human features. A long neck and torso meets the downward breasts and outward stretched arms of the piece. 10 2022-29-4 Mask This mask is called pwo, referencing the feminine, the sacred mother. Masks such as this example were performed during initiation ceremonies. The vertical lines on either side of the face mask below the eyes is suggestive of tears. The pride and sorrow of the event. The elaborate coiffure is ornamented with trade beads, and the almond-shaped eyes are enhanced by the deep, arching eyebrow line. The mouth is slightly open, showing sharpened teeth. 11 2022-29-7 Mask The name associated with this mask is Chihongo or Tshihongo, known as the male mask recognizable by the prominent horizontal ridge below the mouth. Large convex almond-shaped eyes, with a high arching brow line and narrow raised nose. There are two dark incised crosses below the eyes as a cruciform on the forehead. The dark lipped open mouth has triangular teeth. The raised oval ears have metal, double hoops and holes around the edge of the mask have a fur and fiber net attached. 2022-29-7 (Mask) image
