RSC-Ohio-179 (Hymn )

Two handwritten hymns. The left column has the original hymns in a different language (Ojibwe?), the right column has the English translations. The top hymn is titled "Hymn. [illegible] Mr. W. Coy", the bottom one is titled "Hymn - Mr. Meeker." This paper was included with several others dating to 1833-1839 from Ohio discussing an English school. The back has a prayer transcribed by John Dugard. Below are the translations, "//" is used in place of line breaks.

Hymn 1:

"Jesus has died // To prevent us from descending beneath // Jesus has been merciful // I thank you my father God. // Jesus I will constantly love, // Constantly, all he directs me // Entirely all I will do. // I desire to be holy like Jesus was // To Jesus I continually pray. // I think of him constantly. // When I sleep he takes care of me // When I am awake he takes care of me. // If I die he will take me // Above to that happy place // Continually I’ll remain with Jesus to whom I go, // No more forever will I grieve."

Hymn 2:

"I love the Great Spirit // Great and righteous is he // I wish to listen to him also // I wish to obey him also. // God has helped me // He has had mercy on me // He has always taken care of me // By and by I hope above he will take me. // God sees me // He knows all that I do // He hears all that I say, // He knows all my secret thoughts. // My father, my heart is wickedly inclin’d // Wickedness I have committed, // If thou shall refuse to help me // Beneath I must go. // See the Indians, also // Help to be much engaged in religion // See those who obey thee // Above thro’ mercy receive them."

Prayer on the back:

"O Son of God perfect in all thy ways // In whom all righteousness dwells // Thou bestower of such infinite mercies // On mankind. // O Son of God give us such a portion  // Of Thy grace as may cause us to conform // To Thy Image and dwell with Thee // Thou bestower of such infinite mercies // On mankind. // O Son of God our blessed Savior. // Let us love thee and thee only with // All our hearts // Thou bestower of such infinite mercies, // On mankind. // O Son of God let us sing praises // Unto thee and bow before thee our // Blessed Savior // Thou bestower of such infinite mercies // On mankind."

"This is not verbatim, but the sense as near as I can get it. - John Dugard"
